So here I am in Berne, Switzerland! Right now I’m at the library in the basement of the building in which I work, and this entry is once again going to be on the short side because I have to get out of here before said library closes! I wrote a nice long entry on the flight here and  if I do say so myself it was really good, but I will have to post it once I find an adapter for my laptop. I have two immediate missions- that adapter and a mattress. I pay  $600/mo US for an otherwise very nice apartment that DOESN’T HAVE A MATTRESS ON THE BED? Luckily my boss, Simon, has been incredibly helpful and found a mattress I can borrow for a few weeks, until I’ve either convinced my predecessor to bring one or found another solution. I’ve considered shelling out for a sleeping bag, which I could then reuse and not have to worry about selling a mattress.

Berne is beautiful, except everything here costs an arm and a leg. The Swiss franc is worth about $1.16 US, about $1.10 Canadian. A one-way tram ride is four francs, 15 minutes at a cyber cafe is 7 francs, and takeout food in a styrofoam container was 11 francs. Don’t even think about all-you-can-eat sushi– 55 francs. I’m afraid I’ll go broke!

Traduction a venir parce qu’ils vont fermer la bibliotheque!
